TOG Business Spotlight: Hometown Flameworked Glass Artistry

Resident Larry Rutland, 91, Creates Gorgeous Jewelry and Glass

Next time you stop by the Greenfield Farmers Market, look for a booth for North Creek Studios. You can’t miss it, as it is picturesque with esthetically pleasing fine silver jewelry and flameworked glass marbles, pendants and more.

Owner and artist Larry Rutland, age 91, spent approximately 70 years as a structural engineer, where he learned to appreciate the beauty in the structure of nature and manmade objects. After his education at RPI in Troy, he worked at the Department of Transportation and the Department of Environmental Conservation and then in private practice for approximately 35 years. He also served in the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers for two years.

From 1958 to 2008 Larry lived in Glenville, NY with his wife Jan of 54 years and four children, a daughter and three sons. His artwork, including pastel portraits and landscapes and watercolor landscapes were done in Glenville. After his retirement, he moved to his camp in Greenfield Center, where he developed a hot glass studio and precious metal clay studio. Glass and precious metal clay are still a major part of his art show items.

Janet was president of the National Bottle Museum in Ballston Spa and it was upon her recommendation that Larry sought training in flameworking glass at Corning Inc., after which the museum opened a studio across the street called The Glassworks. For many years, the studio was open for art classes and teen after-school art classes at reduced prices. Larry is currently selling his marbles, jewelry and art at the Greenfield Farmers Market in Middle Grove, and other craft shows like one on Ballard Rd. Oct. 14 and one at Gloversville Middle School on Nov. 18.

“My best sellers are the marbles. I’ve made hundreds and hundreds over the past 40 years,” he said. “There is nothing like the way colors look, especially when you put the glass in the sun.”

His pieces make excellent gifts, with their beautiful individual detail. The price range for a large marble is approximately $20-$30 and they come with a specific holder for presentation. The art glass jewelry pendants cost approximately $15 and with a sterling silver chain necklace $20.

The Greenfield Farmers Market will take place every Friday from 4-7 p.m. at Middle Grove Town Park at 428  Middle Grove Rd. through Sept. 8.
